CANREA

The Canadian Renewable Energy Alliance (CanREA) is an alliance of Canadian civil society organizations from the non-profit or voluntary sector that hold a common interest in promoting a global transition to energy conservation and efficiency and use of low-impact renewable energy. Members of CanREA believe that this transition is needed to address global climate change, pollution, global energy supply, human security, poverty eradication and economic sustainability. CanREA recognizes that our window of opportunity is limited and that this global transition must begin now through individual country action and international cooperation using a variety of market instruments, regulatory measures, public education and voluntary measures.

Australia is one of the highest per capita producers of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the world. The average household produces over 8 tonnes of GHGs each year by using energy that is generated from the burning of fossil fuels. The more fossil fuel generated energy we use, the more we contribute to harmful emissions and climate change.
One way that households and businesses can address this problem is by choosing renewable energy instead of energy that’s generated by the burning of fossil fuels. Green or renewable energy is generated from sources that either don’t run out or can be renewed.
There are several ways to support renewable energy. You could generate your own — by installing a solar panel system on your roof, for example (for information on solar electricity and hot water systems, go to www.choice.com.au).

But the easiest and cheapest way to buy renewable energy is to pay extra for accredited GreenPower from an electricity retailer. Wind power, biomass or organic waste, wave, hydro and solar power, are all examples of green energy sources that are used or being developed in Australia and sold to households and businesses as accredited GreenPower.
There are big differences between renewable energy offers on the market, so look before you jump. Some deals aren’t as green as they seem — such as plans that don’t have government GreenPower accreditation.
Accredited plans differ too, ranging from 10% to 100% GreenPower. And the source of renewable energy sold by retailers, and the prices they charge, also vary widely. You might prefer solar over hydro, for example, or instead just be looking for the cheapest option.

The Greenhouse Effect
The ‘greenhouse effect’ describes how gases reduce the amount of heat escaping from the atmosphere, acting like a blanket around the Earth. It is a natural phenomenon. The 'enhanced greenhouse effect' refers to the additional unnatural (global) warming caused by extra quantities of 'greenhouse gases' including carbon dioxide and methane, generated by human activities. Principal sources of emissions include energy production, transport, organic waste decomposition and land clearing.

Global Warming
Global warming refers to the warming of the Earth due to the enhanced greenhouse effect. The reason why everyone is so worried about this increase in temperature is that it is happening so rapidly and has the potential to cause widespread economic, social and environmental changes.

Scientists have predicted that if global warming is not controlled by the year 2100, the Earth’s temperature may rise by up to 6 0C, and local sea levels may rise by 0.91 metres. There will also be complex changes in weather patterns, including more severe droughts, storms, and floods.
