Ever Green

OLYMPIA , Wash. -- The Evergreen State College and the hard work of students have been recognized with two distinct honors in the past week for the college's commitment to renewable energy.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released the list of the nation's top-ten college and university green power purchasers today - and The Evergreen State College is eighth in the nation with the amount of green power purchased. All of the electricity used at the main campus in Olympia , as well as the Tacoma campus is green, translating to enough energy for more than 1500 homes per year, according to the EPA.

Green energy is non-polluting and is renewable. Common sources of green energy include geothermal power, wind power - which is the type Evergreen purchases - and solar and tidal power. About one million homes in the U.S. purchase green energy.

GreenPower Classroom

Green Power was founded in 1988 by a group of dedicated volunteers concerned about local environmental affairs and problems. We have always put environmental education as our first and foremost priority because we believe that education is the ultimate way of transforming our thinking and behaviour.

Environmental Education
Green Power has established the first ever Green School Network in Hong Kong to encourage environmental education in cooperation with schools. We work closely with teachers to promote and foster green awareness in young children. This pioneering work has seen Green Power partner up with schools to establish an onsite Environmental Resource Centres with three such centres already setup in secondary and primary schools. We also design and install environmental education facilities for schools part of the Green School Network.

Each year, we design more than ten sets of cross-disciplinary environmental education literature aimed at assisting teachers in the environmental education class. Our literature also includes multimedia educational CD-ROMs of varying themes.

We set up "On-line Green Classroom" which offers online users a diverse information on environmental protection. This information can be used for both teaching and learning by teachers and students. In 2001 and 2003 Green Power won the Top 10 Healthy Website Award, the only Hong Kong environmental group to win such an award.

Tackling Environmental Issues
Green Power actively undertakes investigations and research. Reports are released on a regular basis to raise public awareness and understanding of the relationship between the environment and our quality of life and health.

Conservation Work
Green Power will put prime focus on butterfly conservation in the coming years. Together with the public, we hope to explore and preserve the world of butterfly. We have organized a series of butterfly watching training activities for secondary school teachers and students and have joined hands with about 200 secondary school students to build up the first citizen-initiated butterfly database in Hong Kong which shall benefit the butterfly conservation work in the long term.

We established Hong Kong Butterfly Net with the hope of taking the public into the world of butterflies in Hong Kong. The Net provides over a hundred butterfly photos and a variety of information on butterflies including the diversity, ecology and conservation of local butterflies.

Participation in Environmental Policy
Green Power has representatives in many governmental environmental advisory bodies to make our voice heard

* Advisory Council on Environment
* Town Planning Board
* The Country and Marine Parks Board
* Transport Advisory Committee
* Environmental Campaign Committee

Grays Harbor

Effective October 1st, 2001 the District’s Commission approved Rate Schedule 90, which began the District’s Green Power Program.  This program makes it possible for District customers to voluntarily choose renewable energy resources for all or part of the energy they use in their homes and businesses.  These customers support the development and operation of renewable energy generation projects though the purchase of blocks of renewable energy.  Each block is equivalent to a 100 kWh (kilowatt hour) purchase. Currently, each 100 kWh block is priced at $3.00.  This amount is in addition to the normal cost of electricity, per your current rate schedule.

Duke Green Power Challenge

Environmental Alliance and Duke University are challenging each member of the Duke community to take responsibility for the environmental impact of their electricity use by signing up for green power. Did you know that...

* Electricity generation is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States
* Over 70% of our electricity still comes from burning fossil fuels

By signing up for the Duke Green Power Challenge, you can now choose to have a school year's worth of energy generated by a clean, renewable source, such as wind power. When you sign up, the University is going to double your impact by matching your purchase of green power!
